Governance
Namibia is a republic with a multi-party democracy. Freedom fighter and revolutionary Dr Samuel Nujoma of SWAPO is the country’s President. It was under his aegis that Namibia won its freedom from South Africa. The President functions as both head of state and head of the government. He is elected to a five-year term by popular vote and carries out executive functions with the assistance of a cabinet appointed by him from among the members of the National Assembly. The Legislative arm of the country consists of a bicameral legislature made up of the National Council and the National Assembly. The Republic of Namibia has the first constitution in the world to guarantee amongst other standard things like fundamental rights and freedom, the protection and conservation of the environment.
